Didn't mean to worry people:

Sorry all - didn't realise you might not have read [livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000's post where my accident was discussed.. basically I smashed a glass into the side of a counter-top while trying to catch it as it was falling. A large piece of glass was driven between my middle and index fingers on my left hand. It was quite deep as these things go; I think that contributed to the shock that soon set in after that. Thankfully the first aiders at work were fantastic and looked after me. They took me to casualty just to check there were no glass fragments in the wound. Can you believe they x-ray'd my hand to check? I was dubious about the technique at the time, but it seems x-rays are at least partially blocked by glass.

Anyway, I've spent this evening performing the appropriate rituals over some PC bits and bobs I ordered. I must have sacrificed the right amount of blood, too (as my left index finger, a different wound, goes to show) - all of the jobs went more smoothly than I was expecting. T's PC from her house had blown up it's power supply. I swapped the power supply and everything else was alright - winner! I hacked the old power supply's fan out to put in her PC to give it some extra cooling - essential in this hot weather.

Then I ripped out the bits of my current desktop machine and transplanted them along with the bits from T's PC at my house into a wideboy case (it's a midi tower where instead of the PSU being at the top of the case, it's at the side, sitting above the CPU socket). This also went well. I switched the PC on, got all the connections right first time. I had to use a Windows CD to repair the installation to get it to boot, and I will have to install the right drivers for the soundcard etc, but otherwise that PC is now working and somewhat upgraded (her old PC was flaking out previously because of the heat).

Finally I put together the new bits I'd been saving in the new case I bought and I now have my new shiny desktop machine. Not only did I get all the connections right first time, but I didn't even have to repair the installation - it just booted and detected a whole load of stuff. Win!

Now I think it's time for bed. Hopefully I'll sleep well with the window closed (no sudden noises early in the morning to wake me up) and the new phallus fan blowing over me gently all night (ooer!).

Looking forward to quad-biking or whatever it's called tomorrow :)

*grin* I wish I had done that when I cut my hand last month breaking a glass window.

Goodluck!

(At least your excuse sounds a lot more sensible than mine. "I thought the window was plastic".)

Hope your hand is feeling better!

I was running full pelt on a field last year, bare foot (yes, I know!!) and hurtled onto some broken glass. Know exactly what you mean about the shock - weird innit? I just thought I'd trod on a bee or something, though in a split second before friends could stop me I brushed the bit of glass out of my foot.

While they stood around gawping and going oh shit, I knew I needed something to stem the blood, so took a tampon out of my bag, pressed that on it[1], and stuck a couple of plasters (luckily I'd had blisters and carried them) over to hold it in place. Good or what under the circumstances? :o)

They x-rayed me too to check for more before stitching it up. That was the part that hurt like hell - bottom of your foot is tough so after 6 anaesthetic jabs it still wasn't numb at all.

Shock is bizarre - adrenaline messes up your system doesn't it? Was on holiday with friends at the time, got back from A&E and drank a glass of wine, and felt absolutely wasted. Then promptly fell asleep for about 12 hours.

[1] I have since learnt you shouldn't actually press onto a cut like that - if there is any glass in there you'll push it in deeper.

I used to do first aider duty at disco dancing competitions. The venue was a club that got used for people getting drunk the night before. The number of glass in foot injuries was scarey (although gives you good practice at using a pair of tweezers..)

I still shiver when I think about it, and am so paranoid now. I don't like going in pubs in flip flops, and the other day I knocked a glass off the draining board at home and it smashed - before I'd have picked it up but I literally leaped out the room and put shoes on!

Lesson learned. :o)

I used to work at a pub and in the height of summer a lot of us wore flip flops without giving it a second's thought.

One day, the manager called a staff meeting and said (he was portuguese, his english wasn't the best) "you wear flip flops for work, you go home and change them, you wear flip flops again, you sacked"

We were outraged at first but after a few seconds we realised it was completely rational really.

*hugs*
hope the hand's ok quickly.

Would you believe I burnt my hand today? I had a plate of freshly cooked food in each hand, and the really hot burny type sauce just poured allover my left hand.
There's a blister now, but yours sounds worse.

*more hugs*
