I am obviously accepted now within the roleplaying group. sebastian_lux is there, along with sacha37, who gave me a set of 10d10 tonight *grin*. Thank you! I was quite touched :) And they're so pretty! :)

You're playing a White Wolf game then?

Some friends of mine did a combined Vampire/Werewolf/Mage campaign a few years ago and my mate Simon ended up coding the combat system on some ancient Commodore sytem he had lying around, so they could avoid the buckets of dice.

Yes, a Mage game. I thought up rules very similar to the Mage system while younger and playing AD&D and getting disillusioned with the magic system in that game.

Yeah, when I was a lot younger most of my computery type projects revolved around combat enumerators too :)

I haven't seen those (apart from the one or two in my dice bag) for years. I remember reading in the red D&D books that you were supposed to colour in one set of numbers with crayon so it'd double as a d20.

Have you ever played Formula De? That has a number of interesting dice to roll (one for each gear, 1st gear is a d4, 6th gear is a d30, but with strange numbering).

This one was pretty ambitious, especially considering the hardware. It could handle all of the combat options for Vampire, Werewolf, and Mage (second editions).

Simon was also working on turning Block Mania into a Java web app. I think he sort of stopped working on it after a while, but it looked cool and avoided the need to stack huge quantities of damage markers everywhere.

I always felt the d20-as-d10 rolled better than the trapezohedral d10.

I've not played Formula De - though I played Formula One a lot as a kid, and recently resurrected it. (When I found it in my mum's garage, the rules were missing and I couldn't remember them. Fortunately, the web came to my rescue!) I get the impression many people feel the game mechanics get bogged down?

Having played Rolemaster quite a bit, I've tended to feel that things like irregularly-numbered d30s are a gimmick, unless they're used a lot. Far simpler to provide a d% lookup table. Also, a d20 is about the limit of what you can roll on an even slightly squidgy tablecloth.

I really want to play Blood Royale again. Unfortunately, it would appear everyone else does, too. )-8

A friend of mine has a copy, and keeps talking about getting a game together.

I've played it a few times, it's certainly worth a go occasionally, though the investment of time required is considerable (on a par with Civilisation or Advanced Civilisation).

Where abouts in the world are you?

Well, this copy of Blood Royale is in Birmingham (Moseley to be exact). I can't offer any promises, but I'll mention you to Liam as someone who'd potentially be willing to devote the time required for Blood Royale and we'll see what happens. (I'm trying to get him on LJ, this may happen sooner or later).
