First full day at home
Jan. 10th, 2008 02:40 pmThis is my first full day at home. Gardening leave. Such an innocuous term for the hunt for another source of income. I was fairly discouraged when I searched online and found only contracting roles that required DV clearance - nothing I could even apply for. Still, the agencies have my CV now. I did find one potential one, so one of the agents is putting me forwards for that.
I determined to be productive whilst at home, so today I have cycled to Tesco and bought ingredients for, and started cooking Beef and Beer in the new slow cooker I have. I also cleaned the kitchen a bit and managed to get ( a reasonable picture of Ratchet )
I just lifted the lid to the slow cooker and it smells absolutely WONDERFUL. Oh god I hope it tastes as good as it smells. I need some lunch.
Right, I think it's time for a bit more searching, this time to some music. Then, I might play a game for a bit or get on with one of the many little geek things I've been planning to do. Well, it's kind of gardening, I suppose...

I have just checked my bank account, expecting the worst (I mean, I've told you all about my extravagance over the last month, plus I've been off work for the last 3 weeks, mostly unpaid). Imagine my surprise to see a credit from my new company for the last week of this month - before I've even started working there!
Somewhat unexpected...
Sep. 19th, 2005 01:55 pmI've just given all mywork's stuff in to work. A week early.
( details )
So here I am, sitting on
kissycat1000's sofa, typing this entry, officially 'between jobs'. I feel quite knackered and run down and probably glad I don't have to go into work this week, but still. Bit of a weird way to go.
Oh, note: Anyone who thinks they have a mobile number for me - you don't. I don't currently own any mobile phones.

Sorry I didn't get to the Emergency Judder last night. I would have liked to celebrate too, but I was far too broken at the end of a long and stressful day. The last thing I want to do now is get so run down I get tonsilitus, miss my operation and end up having to go for my operation at the start of my new job... so it was Mr. Sensible for me last night.

I've accepted the Messagelabs job, and handed in my notice here.
I'm not quite sure it's hit me yet.
I've unhidden all my entries about the job (hidden for obvious reasons).
More, perhaps, later.

It all feels a bit unreal as I sit here waiting for the Directors' meeting to finish. I think we're going to end up having an IT meeting first, but I should be able to get some time with my boss before she goes.
Oh, my tonsillectomy is 1st September. That's next Thursday. Argh.
Still, I think it might all work out well. Guess we'll find out soon :)

Today promises to be interesting:
Aug. 25th, 2005 07:47 amCouldn't get to sleep last night for nerves. Woke up early for the same reason.
Today I have:
( More gibber under here )
Today I have:
- A pre-assessment appointment at the hospital at 9am for my impending tonsillectomy (which according to the daft letter I've already had) which promises needles and other unpleasant things.
- A list of questions already written to ask the HR person at Messagelabs - I'm hoping they can satisfy them on the call, otherwise that's going to be another tortuous wait.
- Go into work for 12pm - I'm working until 10pm tonight to help them test out bridge functionality over a 10Mbit link
- While I'm at work - the biggie - corner my boss and tell her the news and wait for her reaction.
- Oh, and if I get through all that and feel like partying, there's Emergency Judder tonight.

*drum* *drum*
Aug. 24th, 2005 01:14 pmWhere's my contract?!
Now I've had the offer and completed the paperwork I want to check over the full offer and contract before I can approach my boss and tell her the good news (*grin*). Messagelabs are supposed to be preparing the contract for me to pick up from reception.
I also had the slightly unpleasant experience of checking with my boss when she was in (as she's been out all week and I just heard she was off again soon). She instantly became curious and I had to tell her "I wasn't prepared to discuss it just yet". She eventually let it go, but still.
I just want to get on with it now, and have it all settled, so I know when it's all happening and how my current place are going to treat me in the mean time.

I'm still waiting for the decision on my job *sigh*. Should be Tue/Wed this week. My gut feeling is that they're waiting to see if there's anyone better.. which is fair enough, given how I feel the technical interview went (down to nerves due to the method of communication - video conference). I'm almost tempted to call up on Monday and offer to meet the guy who would be my boss face to face as he's supposed to be coming down on Tue/Wed.. I think I fare a lot better in face to face meetings. Any opinions?
Shattered. Won't know until mid-end next week, while I'm on holiday. Ah well.
Not sure how the interview went. It was via video conference although he only had a freeze frame after a minute or so (probably me with my finger up my nose or something equally repugnant). Didn't get to talk about what I've been up to recently, so wasn't able to sell myself like before. It was just a technical interview and I had a tough time understanding exactly what he was driving at with his questions. Realised afterwards I'd made a couple of silly mistakes, but hopefully that'll be put down to nerves.
He talked about the benefits offered at the end of the interview, so I'm taking that as a good sign.
Not much else to say right now - a bit of an anti-climax.

Interview stuffage
Aug. 9th, 2005 01:31 pmI now have a video conference second interview with Messagelabs tomorrow late afternoon.
Plus: At least I won't be waiting around for a phone call
Minus: I have to get dressed up again.. oh, and
kissycat1000 and
ev1ldonut - it kinda conflicts with the BBQ plans we had..

Good news and bad news
Aug. 5th, 2005 07:28 pmWell, I finally heard back from Messagelabs. The good news is that they want me back for a second interview! The bad news is that by the time they get around to organising it, they'll most likely want to do it when we're on holiday. So it won't happen for another couple of weeks then *sigh*.
Ah well - it's progress, and of a positive sort.

Pre-interview
Jul. 25th, 2005 08:32 amWell last night I was fairly stressed - I should have sorted all these things out well in advance.
- I couldn't find my degree certificate (yes I did think at the time that it's not going to end up being important, but I will ring the uni today and see if they can't fax me a copy for now, and request a duplicate to be posted to me).
- My suit's been nibbled by moths! Argh! The trousers are fine, but the jacket has two tiny but noticable holes. Ruined! That's fairly annoying (and not good for stress levels). I'm just going to wear the trousers I think.
- Last night I ended driving back to my house twice from
kissycat1000's where I was staying to pick up first my belt, then my good shoes.
ev1ldonut very kindly polished my shoes, and the iron wasn't horribly against me this time so I managed to get the wrinkles in the right place on my shirt.
- I managed to get back in touch with my old unix mentor - she's one of the top people in her field (network security), and she's agreed to give me a reference, so that's a big plus.
I can't find my degree certificate for my interview tomorrow at 5pm! ARGH! And I haven't yet managed to get hold of an old friend who would make a fantastic referee. Incidentally I found myself using my current company's phone to call my old company to find out the details of an employee for a reference for the application for my new job. Much amusement.
I start work at 7:30am tomorrow morning, then at 4pm I leave, change into my suit and drive to the interview. Then I'm supposed to be roleplaying from 8pm until 11pm, then up again at 7:30am the next morning! Hmmm. I think tomorrow is going to kill me.
