... rather than, say, creating a new private journal with just a much smaller set of friends and leaving this one with everyone for when you want to let your wider group of friends know how you're doing?

Of course it is entirely up to you, but *I* for one will miss hearing stuff (unless you intend to make everything "public" here and so we don't need to be *your* friend to see your postings of course ...)

Up to you but I've a policy on principle against asymmetric LJ friendships - if you want to be able to read or comment on my LJ I need you to be on my friends list, and if I'm not on yours, you can't be on mine.
