Well, they're not essential, just very handy. Provided you don't mind turning the ignition off every time you want to come to a standstill, having a juddery start when you want to move off again, and needing very careful rev matching to slip through the synchromesh every time you need to change gear.
I had to get my car to the garage with a snapped clutch cable once. Not fun, but I managed it!
