So I didn't return to work today. I called up and offered to work from home instead, as I wasn't well enough to return. My normally accommodating line manager was dictatorial in his response that if I was well enough to work I should come in to work. He further added that he didn't know who was and who wasn't allowed to work from home. I said that I wasn't well enough to come in to work, so he asked if I was going to take another day sick, to which I replied yes.

I doubt it was his intention, and I know Monday mornings are usually busy, but I dislike being made to feel extra guilt for my inability to work at the moment due to my illness.

I have to admit I'm feeling quite down today.

That's horrible. Why do they always hear "I can't be arsed" when you're saying "I'm really making an effort"?

However, you should be concentrating you, not work. Guilt is no kind of medicine.

They know I work hard, and my line manager is normally agreeable. I am trying to convince myself it's just Monday morning troubles, but the nagging paranoia on top of my existing guilt won't leave me alone :(

If you're still ill it can't be helped. Try not to let them make you feel guilty. I think it was admirable of you to offer to work at all.

He's usually such a stable (50s, married, kids) character though which gave me extra cause for concern.

You could have always told him, I can work, I just don't want to infect the rest of the office with my nasty illness, thus saving the company loads of time off apportioned to other people. I usually go in and cough on my boss until he tells me to go home :-P
