Just feeling a bit un*something* at the moment. Work has thrown me another screwball in a minor way which leaves me to try to play due diligence and technical foresight off against stepping on toes and 'not my problem'. Lots of you know how stubborn I am, and therefore which way I'm going. I've flagged it to my manager (god bless managers). Perhaps I'm just not jaded enough yet to ignore it.

Anyway, I also managed to bollox up tonight's roleplaying session, which required skill and judgement which I was clearly lacking. I can't help draw a parallel between the two. Still, at least I have more background in my technical area than my character area...

With the work situation, really, you've done what you can. Now the best thing you can do is sit back and smugly say "told you so" when it doesn't go like they wanted it to.

Unless you let them get it wrong after you've told them they were going to, they won't realise your worth. They'll just see things going right and see you as the annoying guy who won't let them get on with thier job and mind his own business. Just a couple of times, tell them you think they're wrong, then let them f*ck up anyway when they don't listen. Then they'll see that you weren't just being annoying, you actually know what the hell you're on about!

It's kinda like being a parent I suppose. You have to let them get it wrong sometimes, or they never learn...

Firstly as I saw the roleplay session in question I have to say that that seeking was exceptionally hard. The whole I Ching stuff was too confusing and although I would have done some things differently I can't imagine that I would have done much better.

Secondly what your character has lost can be easily replaced with a little time. It's like my loosing two Permanent Willpower a few weeks ago. I was really gutted having only just bought the level up but I've already bought one dot back and am within a couple of weeks of the other. If you bung a couple of points per week on Arete you should have it back in 9 weeks, and less if you factor in Danger and End of Story points!

Thirdly it's only a game mate. :-) I made the mistake of taking my gaming too seriously and it didn't do me any good. Don't think about it too much buddy.

My manager replied to the email telling me he supports me - but if the customer wants it and the management know the pitfalls then it's their call.

We all agree it's a ticket to hell for the salespeople and we all also agree that the customer isn't ultimately going to benefit. The management know but want to press ahead anyway.

I've done my bit - it was mainly making sure that everyone knew the implications. They can shoot themselves in the foot as long as they know it's their own foot and that's a gun they're holding...

Ah, it's nice ot know that the manager rcognises it as well. There's no more you can do, except hand them the gun and say "try not to point this end at yourself, m'kay?".

I feel bad because I'm usually absolutely knackered after a weekend and never on my best form. John actually said that the plan itself wasn't bad, just my execution was sloppy.

I know it can be recovered, I'm not too upset about the loss in-game. I play for enjoyment and I still am - I do just find a lot of the system unfathomable which is why I stick to simpler things like hitting things hard and blowing things up.

Don't forget I also lost a couple of points of permanent willpower, so I now have Arete 3 Willpower 5... good thing I also have some reasonable non-magic related stats!

I know it's only a game, I don't take it seriously. I just felt that there were parallels I could draw about my performance in the game to my performance in real life. That was the part that I felt a bit down about. Anyway, I feel more vindicated as my manager agrees - see my comment to ev1ldonut above..

I'd forgotten about your willpower as well. :-S

I personally find the Mage system a little over complicated at times, far too math based for my liking. I much prefer Vampire.

Anyway, I don't think John was saying that the execution was sloppy but more that he was watching what you said and took advantage of when you made an exasberated order. The was what he was getting at with the "I Ching" bit. It was a mistake at the end of the day and we all do that from time to time. Even me on rare occasions! :-)

I just hope there's no Chinese prophecy in my Seeking!! :-)
