Renew your passport before the government force you to submit your biometrics to their database - something I believe will increase your risk of identity fraud, and the principle if not the execution of which I believe detracts from your freedom. This site contains more information on the suggestion.

My passport has a couple of years left on it.

Do you know how late I can leave renewal and still get a non-biometric one?

According to the fact sheet available from the site, "maybe in 2008 or 2009, but possibly before".

..confusingly, the fact sheet also says: "But the way you can get a passport will change from as early as October."

More research is clearly necessary.
