Well, my 30th is this year, on 28th August 2007. I thought I should do something a bit out of the ordinary for it, and the idea of a medieval banquet kept popping up in the back of my head. So, it's getting on a bit now for making these sorts of arrangements, but let's give it a go and see what level of interest there is.

After having a trawl around, Cardiff Castle looks like the best place to have a medieval banquet. This one will be a traditional welsh banquet, with a cost of £35 a head, which includes all food, wine and entertainment (click the link for the menu and more details). UPDATE: New organisational post is here.

Although I don't usually do fancy dress, it might be nice to give it a go :)

I guess we'd make a weekend out of it. We're vaguely thinking of taking the train so we can all drink; it'll be cheap enough as well if it's booked enough in advance.

There may be a separate party weekend to all this as well, depending on all sorts of things :)

So:

Sounds like a lovely idea even if the thoughts of Cawl and Laverbread are bringing back bad childhood memories! Though I am sure they make both far better than my Irish, turned Welsh, Grandmother.

It's really not my kind of thing, I'm afraid. But I'm certainly interested in a traditional party at your place if one is happening.

A minor issue is that August 29th will be the second anniversary for [livejournal.com profile] lizzip and me, though we'll probably celebrate that on the day itself rather than either adjacent weekend.

sounds ace, but it's my 30th on the 30th of August, and i intend to celebrate it by getting utterly off my face in Glasgow.

There are a range of suggested dates if you'd like to come?

I realised that would probably be your problem :/

Ah well it's a couple of months away at present; let's hope you find something before then! :)

Which reminds me. It's my 40th on 16th July. Are you still okay for a do at yours near then (either the 14th or 21st)?

I think of those two, the 21st works best because on the previous weekend we have plans for the Friday night (Judder) and Saturday daytime (Tewkesbury Battle) and I have plans for Saturday night, though I can tweak them if I really have to. The weekend of the 21st does contain the Joust though, so we may have to leave you a key in case you get 'home' on Saturday before we do.

Obviously confirm this with the people who actually live there, but they're likely to ask me which is the best weekend of the two, because it's not clear on the shared calendar because they both look quite full. :)

It's not bad actually - free mead and wine which got us sozzled last time we went. They sing songs between courses and drag people up on stage.

It's nice food, good veggie option. Not terribly medieval and you don't get to have the whole banqueting hall to yourself but worth the money.

I went to one in Coventry which had a head table and a sort of running play about knights invading the monastery - that's an eating with fingers sort of do! (I don't think the meal was quite as nice though...)

I was thinking that the 21st would probably be better, as I think the family may want to do something with me the weekend before (although nothing's been said).

Will wait and see what Alex and Mat say. :-)

Can't do the 18th or the 8th due to prior commitments but if it happens to fall on the 1st count myself and my "plus one", whom I shall name Moina for ease of remembering, in! :-)

Looks like the 21st July is best, although it does look like we will be at the Joust during the day on Saturday, before the party in the evening. You could come to the Joust with us, or we could leave you a key so you can get in and start the party :)
