Last weekend I went to a LAN at an old friend's in Bristol. It was a small and friendly LAN; the host cooked breakfast and dinner for us every day. OMG the food was SO nice! I asked him how much for him to come and cook for me but he just laughed. Ah well.

After I've finished this current project at werk (hopefully within a couple of weeks), I plan to take some holiday, in which I plan to tend my rapidly overgrowing garden, rearrange my utility area and swap over the fridge-freezers, go through PC bits and create a new faster PC for J, and just generally relax.

I may be up for visiting people or doing whatever too. Leave me a comment if you'd like me to visit, probably on my bike..

I'd like to book a couple of days please, because according to the calendar, I'm not actually going to get to send any time alone with you for the next couple of months. :)

No, but we know we're planning to spend some evenings together, yes? :)

That would be nice. :)

Can I book some of your time off anyway?

I recommend Cambridge on a Thursday evening. Lots of people all end up in the same pub at the same time. You know quite a few of them, and you'd probably like many of the others. (-8

which pub? I used to live in Cambridge - would be interesting to know where some LJ people hang out if I get back up that way

The Carlton Arms. Notionally it's a weekly meeting for the university's science fiction society, but I bet most of the attendees don't even realise this; it's full of goths and real ale fans and geeks and sci-fi nuts and the like. I'd expect anywhere between 25 and 50 people on a typical Thursday. While it's not haute cuisine, they do good food at sensible prices, too.

Not a request for a visit, but in domestic-improvement news: Our house has to be completely cleared as the landlord wants us out.
Mel and I have concluded that the blue sofa will be too big for our new house - would you like it?

Yes, of course :)

Er, unsure. My front room isn't exactly large and I'm planning to buy a corner suite to make best use of the room available. However, it would make sense for me to come and take some measurements at least so I can give it some proper consideration. It may even be that I am not going to be able to upgrade the sofa for a while so yours might just fill the gap nicely. Thanks for the offer :)

HA! Not all that far from where I used to live (Milton Road). My best friend's mum used to live on Verulam way. Arbury used to have quite a bad reputation - has it shed that somewhat or is this pub a kind of "jewel in the crown"?

Arbury's reputation isn't brilliant, no, but the Carlton Arms is right on the edge. It used to be a very seedy pub but it closed down a few years ago then reopened with new landlord and landlady (Jethro and Terri) who have turned it round remarkably.

For a long while the more southerly bar was non-smoking and the other smoking; people used to joke that the boundary of Arbury went right through the middle of the pub. Now the entire place is non-smoking and the character of the other bar is steadily improving too. (-8
