This is my first full day at home. Gardening leave. Such an innocuous term for the hunt for another source of income. I was fairly discouraged when I searched online and found only contracting roles that required DV clearance - nothing I could even apply for. Still, the agencies have my CV now. I did find one potential one, so one of the agents is putting me forwards for that.

I determined to be productive whilst at home, so today I have cycled to Tesco and bought ingredients for, and started cooking Beef and Beer in the new slow cooker I have. I also cleaned the kitchen a bit and managed to get a reasonable picture of Ratchet:

Ratchet

I just lifted the lid to the slow cooker and it smells absolutely WONDERFUL. Oh god I hope it tastes as good as it smells. I need some lunch.

Right, I think it's time for a bit more searching, this time to some music. Then, I might play a game for a bit or get on with one of the many little geek things I've been planning to do. Well, it's kind of gardening, I suppose...

I have been applying for jobs even if they say they absolutely require a qualification I do not have. I have no idea how far enthusiasm and an ability to start immediately can go but I think it is a fair way.
Good luck.

Heh, thanks.

Luckily I have a broad experience to draw on, so I can generally pick up most specific technologies pretty darn quickly. Trouble is, at my level, people tend to be looking for people who don't have to get up to speed with the technology first.

The external role I'm currently hoping for is at a small company, where my broad experience should be very useful to them, so it sounds fairly promising.

Heh, he really needs his collar sorting out. We should chop off most of that excess, it's never going to be needed!

Mmmmm.. Beef and Beer...
Belly rumbling now, and I wasn't even hungry 'till I read that you git! ;)

Do job adverts which mention DV clearance actually need you to already have it, or do they just mean that you'll need it if you do get the job?

I was hoping the latter, but it would seem the former is greatly preferred.

Well, it cuts down on cost for the employer. I still have Clearance: lapsed on my CV, because while it's useless for operational purposes, it means regaining clearance will be easier and cheaper.

Yes, understandable of course. I nearly went into Govt work while I was at an old consulting company - I would have got clearance then. I'm rather annoyed I didn't now. Aah well.

He is yes, just a bit too fond of wires, unfortunately. This is a slight problem in a house like mine.

gardening leave is fucking awesome! When else do you get a full salary for three months and you're *not allowed* to get another job until it finishes?

Brilliant.

Wasn't very good for my poor liver though.

Uh, it's not always 3 months. In my case, it's two weeks. I have a month's pay in lieu of notice...

There is still a chance I'll get an internal role too.
