I've just convinced my managers the project I'm working on is a red herring, and we've agreed to halt it for now, pending review by people from "products", whatever they are.

In other news, I had customer service. I am to receive some replacement parts free of charge for a heatsink. Woohoo! :)

Replacement parts for a heatsink? What is this - touch-up paint? A couple of cool-faster fins to make it look racier?

I had thoughts along those lines myself, but didn't think it politic to comment.

No, replacement brass standoffs. The heatsink is a ThermalRight SLK-900U. It uses 4 standoffs through the holes in the motherboard, screwed to a back-plate. Unfortunately one of them snapped off at the top of the screw thread. One email and I got a reply telling me they were shipping them to me from the Far East, free of charge. Result!

I had a feeling it would be something sensible like that.

That's a real beast of a heatsink. We used two of the 80mm fan variants (with a normal clip, as the Tyan Tiger doesn't have holes) on my mate Dan's machine, didn't know they came any bigger.

Yes, this is a relatively new model. I'm using it for exactly the same reasons - quiet decent cooling :)

I want to experiment with water cooling as some of the german-made pumps are supposed to be very quiet. But time and money, time and money. *sigh* :)

I may well delve into SMP and get a dual opteron system and attempt to watercool that :)

This mean I get my stopgap TI HSF back... or are you still falling foul of that wayward capacitor? :P Incidently you've reminded me that I've got a spare watercooling kit - I'll have to work that into the RAID/dual boot incarnation of Barry I mentioned ;)

I think I've decided to try and melt the solder and simply bend it enough out of alignment to allow the heatsink to sit properly.

Once that is the case of course I'll return your TI HSF :)

Is that Ben's old kit? I'll be interested to see how it turns out :)

Yep it's Ben's old stuff, it requires some more 8/1 tubing and water, but that's all that's stopping me. GL with the soldering iron :)

I wonder if u could kill someone by thermal bonding 30 HSF's to em and letting em rip :) Would that be sufficient to lower their core temperature? Answers on a postcard plz :P
