I'm very wary too, not only from a social standpoint but a security standpoint. Irritatingly, it would seem the best defense is to sign up, even if you do nothing with it.
Just ignore the silly meme, it makes even less sense now that they've changed it to include anyone who's ever added you (ie all those adding each friend in turn to see which ones were mutual). You might find that as you've got a conventional (albeit fairly rare) name as an LJ name you get people adding that name. I get this all the time with people (it always seems to be teenage American girls) adding me to their friends list. When I look at their friends list it says richard, harry, chuck, bob, dylan... "No, those are your real friends, grrrrrr". They generally only make one post and never use it again. I had about 4 or 5 crushes when I checked which I guess is all from those same people
