So I thought I'd give it a try, just to ward off any would-be depression. I seem to have purchased not just one pair but two pairs of speakers (a long, long overdue purchase some of you might argue).

Couldn't face real hi-fi shop prices, so the upper end of Richer Sounds it was: a pair of TDL Studio 10s and a pair of Mordaunt Short 914s. Ordinarily I would have shied away from the TDLs but they're reduced from £400 so I wanted to try them both in case I was missing a trick. The 914s are actually a light wood finish and the shop demo ones as they didn't have any in stock; I'll return/swap them for new black ones when I decide.

Anyway, they're sitting at home waiting for me to play with them this evening with [livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000.

Feeling a bit run down.

This link artistic/interactive in an urban-decay kind of way, of appeal to [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut etc, cadged from [livejournal.com profile] gerald_duck's post with other interesting links here.

I think either you've deliberately made a joke link, or you may have mispasted that link. As it just links back to the friends page of whoevers LJ you're on at the time. ;)

At this rate you'll have more speakers than room! You should think about maybe getting/building an active sub as well. Especially if you're getting some nice quality main speakers. :)

Told you before there's nothing wrong with a bit of retail therapy, it's most effective if done right. ;)

Whoops. Forgot to include the link *grins*

I probably won't need a sub...

..

Doesn't mean I won't prat around making one ;)

Nobody needs a sub...
But it does give the sound more depth, and allow more detail in the mid/high range. :)

I went to Gerald's LJ and found the link you meant anyway...
Some of those photos are just spectacular, I mean, really just breathtakingly gorgeous. I'd love to get to a site like that! The very first one is my favourite, the bloke at the front gives it such an amazing sense of perspective, I love the symmetry and sheer hugeness the shot conveys. :)

Oh, actually it seems I liked a different link to the one you put it! I meant the g-cans project!

But that site you linked to is intriguing...
I'll have to look properly at home, can't really do it here. Full screen is a bit too obvious. ;)

Well, yes, but I'm in a concrete room anyway. I tend to follow a more purist route, (ie. stereo, two-way preferably, minimum amount of messing around) - with the important exception that I will tinker and if it sounds better then I stick with it.

Subs are all well and good, but three front speakers, each with six 8" bass drivers is… special. (-8

Seriously - if you have to use a subwoofer, set the crossover really low. When I used one, I eventually settled on a 58Hz crossover, for example.

I don't have to use a sub, but it does things I like to the sound of my (very cheap cos I'm skint, but bloody good for the price) hi-fi.

I have no idea what frequncy my crossover is set to, as it's simply a dial. But it's low, and it works for me. Also the gain is quite low, so you can't really hear the sub at all, but you notice when it's not there :) But I turn it up rather more when using the hi-fi for home cinema. Those explosions really have to shake the floor or it just isn't right. ;)

Hm. One route I was thinking of taking was picking up an old blown XYZ sub cheaply, and ripping out the amp + crossover. The reasonable ones tend to have variable cutoff frequencies which would suit me down to the ground. (And not just variable resistors but a finite number of circuit-path selectors.)

Hopefully being in a concrete room will mean I won't miss a sub too much ;)
