So, in addition to some bad news about the bike I sold to [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut, my bike decides to refuse to start outside the petrol station I stopped at on the way back. Seems the flat battery problem is back. So it's back on charge now, and it will survive the trip I'm sure, but I'll have to book it in to the garage as well (that'll be all three bikes they'll have seen a fair bit of recently) for them to look at *sigh*.

Then I get back home and find [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut as the only logged in user on my silent computer, but it still on several days later (naughty boy), and my fileserver also on (my fault), which chews up power like no one's business.

So GRARG! really. And now I haven't even got time to make food before driving to roleplaying this evening. GRARG! again.

Damn, sorry. :/

I think I ran it because someone asked me to look for directions or something, I forget exactly... :/

But yeah, should have shut it down, sorry...

There's an old adage that one should never sell a car to a friend. If you do, it'll go wrong, and cause bad feeling. I hope the same doesn't apply to motorbikes. /-8

(Having said that, mdw wants to buy my Lexus when I'm done with it. I think I trust him not to hold it against me if the thing should somehow explode the day after he gets it…)

I know, but I've been completely open and honest with [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut about the condition of the bike, and fixed up all known problems (and even had it tuned) before/during selling it to him.

Doesn't stop me feeling bad though, of course, and I have managed to offer advice on getting it and will be helping out with some minor cost-saving efforts.

Whenever I leave a computer I consider when I might next use it. If it's going to be more than 30 mins I shut the thing down :)

Yes, fair enough. :)

you know, on Sunday when I got back to my computer, it was left switched on, with only one person logged on, and it wasn't me... ;)

I have no grudges, I knew everything about the bike that he did. There's no way he could have known about this! It's something I certainly hadn't expected, but it's not the end of the world. :)

I'll still hopefully be there, with one brand new shiny stanchion and brand new front brake pads (watch me fly over the handle bars because I'm not used to them *grin*). If all goes to plan, the suspension will be fixed on Wednesday, then on either Wednesday or Thursday evening, [livejournal.com profile] azekeil will help me change the ruined pads for new ones. Then I'll still be on for the ride (if I have enough money left to put petrol in the thing!!)

That was a conscious decision as I thought we wouldn't be out for long.

Also, when I arrived at yours on Saturday night, the machine was still on trying to shut down. Oh, and I'm going to have to fix your fans soon *grin*

Hey, it still trying to shut down is not the issue *pokes tounge out really far*

*grin* It needs a rebuild, that install of XP is well over a year old now... :/

Yeah, I know the fans need sorting. I intend to get rid of the north bridge fan and replace it with a decent passive heatsink. I'm going to geta convertor for a nice silent 80mm fan to replace the incredibly noisy 50mm CPU fan. I'm thinking about passive cooling for the video card too (hence me enquiring about your currently unused heatpipe). The only thing left then is the PSU, which I think should be fine with a clean out...

Computers - I do admit that I have more machines on that I probably should but the only two I have on often now are Sage (for games and sorting) and Chakaal (for downloading stuff). Sage is only on when I'm using it (or when I go to get food) but Chakaal has been on most of the time recently. Having said that, it only uses a maximum of 90W of power (rating of the laptop brick power supply) and it is busy for most of the time (acc. to the Task Manager).
Every once in a while, I can hear other people's machines on and know for a fact that that person is out. Oh well, I suspect that they're doing lots of things or else they wouldn't be on.

As for the fileserver - I fear how much power it uses up when it's on. :-S

Can you activate spin down times for your HDs in the fileserver? This might save you money. Or try CPU idle - this program nearly shuts down your CPU when it's not needed and can wake up again very quickly. More details upon request, although I'm not sure how much electricity you might save with it - YMMV.

All the HDDs in beast have always been set to spin down after 30 mins idle - even when it was at Fortress Geek. However, I don't know if random processes might just wake them up every now and again. Still, it's better than nothing.

At the moment my electricity bill is about 12 pounds per month, which is fairly good.

My electricity bill is about that per person. But I suppose it's because machines get left on that it isn't lower.
