  • Black and White 2: Buggy as hell. Wait for v1.2 patch. Playability seems less over first version. Disappointment; seems to be focussed on graphics. Graphics require a pixel shader to run. Hmm.
  • Age of Empires III: Less depth than AoEII. Seems to be focussed on graphics.
  • Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War: Winter Assault: More of the same, which is good if you like that sort of thing. Imperial Guard's top weapon seems a tad overpowered - it's a tank you can clear the level with.
  • Dungeon Siege II: This follows on from the first one, giving a lot more depth to the game which improves everything lots. Actually good fun, and fairly speedy to run.

Currently awaiting: Quake 4, F.E.A.R.

Still Awaiting: Dragon Age, Neverwinter Nights 2 (but there's no distributor for Dragon Age, so no idea when that'll be, and I need a new PC for Neverwinter Nights 2 *cries*)

Bah, one's out 2006, the other doesn't even have a release date.

From what I can gather, there does appear to be a bit of a lashback against the publishers who release titles which focus more on graphics than playability. I should hope so too, because more of the titles released recently have fallen foul of this age old eyecandy problem than ever before (IMHO)..

There ARE some damn good games out there though. Oh, like Dungeon Siege 2, which I will add to the list.

Hmm, could be one to look out for. I'd always found the previous ones didn't grab me. It looked like a nice idea, but I couldn't get to grips with the interface and everything else and lost interest. Probably my fault for needing games I can pick up and put down in a hurry.. :/

I have to agree with you about DS2 - it was good fun for about 30 mins or so, but after that it got a bit silly - I ended up giving up on it out of boredom - I found Neverwinter Nights, even as old as it is, to have so much more staying power.

I'm not sure about Oblivion yet - I didn't particularly get on with Morrowind so......

They're still looking for someone to publish Dragon Age - I don't think Atari wants to carry it because it's a "risky" gave given that it's a completely new IP, not built using the D20/3.5e rule structure.

The game is pretty much ready to go though...

Have to agree, the graphics of AoE 3 belie the bland gameplay. B&W2 is just too stunningly easy, it's fun for a while when you can sandbox at the end of each level but I feel like more of an ethereal town planner than a deity. I avoided the 40k expansion since it really didnt seem to add much, the Imperial Guard aren't really my bag - where's the genestealers and tyrannids etc.

I've played both Q4 and FEAR, have to say FEAR's better. The Q4 campaign treads a familiar path but it's more involving than its brother Doom 3. Mission styles very similar to Star Wars Repblic Commando. FEAR's a horror story stapled onto a HL2-esque corridor hunt. Enjoyed what I've played (enemy actually have semi-interesting AI), but a few levels in it's gonna have to change direction to keep my interest.

Multiplayer is where FEAR shines tho, a very Quake 2 experience in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and CTF. Havent tried Q4 online, but a quick local server looksee reveals a repeat of Q3 multiplayer, take it or leave it.

I'm disappointed about Black and White 2 - I've been waiting on that one. :(

Hopefully when it gets released Civ IV will be fantastic!
