I just bought one of these:

Dear god.

I can't believe that you just did that. :P

You've doubled my previous 'impulse buy' record, too...

What was your purchase? A car? I have two series of tags: oopsies for when I buy something, shinies for when I post the result of the oopsie.. In addition I appear not to have made a post about my £1250 speakers (down from £2500).

I sort of impulse bought my house, too. I knew I needed one, but stopped when I saw the one I'm now living in.. ;)

Surround system? Does. Not. Compute.

You're not one who appreciates decent quality HiFi seperates, then?

Ah. *Thinks* £1250 Barely covers the cost of my main amp and cabling, let along the rest of it, and I consider myself to have a budget system. On the other hand, [livejournal.com profile] azekeil's speakers are very nice and will survive a few upgrades of the rest of the equipment (which I'm assured are soon to follow, he's currently considering amplifiers). :)

Just an Alchemist amplifier, Yamaha AV processor (the one that allows you to use your main HiFi amp to run the front speakers while the processor amps the rest, if required), active sub (REL Storm), Rega CD player, Rega turntable, Royd Doublets as main speakers, Mission centre and rear surrounds. Cabling is QED Profile Silver (£15 per metre, fronts, two runs) and QED Kudos (rears) though I can't remember the make of the £120 CD to amp interconnect.

Most of the system was 'used' when I bought it, or left behind when my ex-husband took the really expensive stuff with him when he moved out. I had to get both an amp and a CD player with a budget of £600 and couldn't stomach buying a new £300 piece of kit when I could have a nicer, used one.

The stuff that my ex-husband took with him was mainly Linn. A Kairn preamp + 3 x LK100 power amps + Kabers (with active modules and upgraded footplates) teamed with a Meridian 206b CD/transport. Smooooth.

The amp is an Alchemist Forsetti; your centre is Acoustic Energy, not Mission :p

You've been to my house. The icon is (an odd angle of them). It's just the front speakers. Here they are in mahogany. :)

Oh, and I paid £625 for the matching center speaker from the set too.

I did an impulse buy a while back of £7000. It was a car and I got them down from £8500. [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut can vouch for that. ;) It did take me a few hours, all in, to decide on the car but it was all bought in one day. Most people know that I rarely splurge without quite a lot of pre-research.

That's lovely. I am heading in the direction of needing a portable solution for all my nefarious muso projects, so I reckon I might well follow your footsteps there. Keep me informed on how it performs in the long run...

Unless you want to play games, I would suggest a cheaper laptop based on the same CPU. Dell's are OK - this one is certainly quiet (not sure if that's a requirement or not for you). Bend my ear if you want some more specific advice / simply want to poke my laptops. In fact, between [livejournal.com profile] kisscat1000, [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut and myself we have a low, mid and high priced laptop on hand for weighing up :)

Will-do - we shall have a geek about this at some point over a pint or six.

My main concern is hard-drive speed in laptops - 5400rpm simply won't cut it with the number of audio and/or video streams I need to run simultaneously. Sure, an external firewire drive *is* a solution, but it's one more box rattling around in the flightcase to go wrong.

Plus, I'm building up a body of evidence to suggest, politely (at least at first) that Macs might not *necessarily* be the way to go forward in the Music department of the new Strud College... ;D

7,200rpm drives are *just* beginning to come in. It was an option for my laptop. You could do something like buy a cheap laptop and replace the standard HDD with a high-performance one. Dell may even let you do that as part of their options online.

Certainly, we'll crunch over the figures and see what it looks like.

There *are* laptops out there with two internal HDDs, but expect to pay a premium for them. :)

Well, when he got a house, I took his old room, when he got new bike, I bought his old one, now he has a new laptop, I've bought the old one.

There may be a pattern here...? *grin*

That's very true. Icarus set me back £1,200 when I bought him, and he's still going strong 3.5 years later (although has developed a few attendant 'foibles' in his old age, bless him); should go another 2 or 3 years I reckon before dying completely. ;)

I'm guessing that Icarus is not a 75 year old super-rich slave man?

Sadly not. Icarus is my laptop. :) (yes, I have that horrendous role-player attribute of naming computers, cars, and everything else...)

Verrrry shexay :D I need/want a laptop.. for purely lazy reasons mind- I want to do msn and LJ from bed. I suspect I'd never leave the house again, and it wouldn't be as nice as yours.. but certainly going to be topping my "must buy when jobbed" list.

Shiny indeed.

I want a new laptop.

And a new car.

And a new house.

I think the laptop is the only one I'll be able to afford, though... Currently considering IBM and Dell business portables rather than all-out gaming machines...
