Wheeee!

Well I've finished my big work project and I may have had a drink or two to celebrate... *grin*

(Only *slight* fly in the ointment: my new laptop has been delayed until the 4th May, but I called to complain and got the £60 shipping cost that was built in refunded as a matter of principle)

Bah - my new laptop is still in the:

Dell: Are you sure you really want 1920x1200 on a 15.4" TFT?
Me: Erm, I think so, but it's an expensive mistake to make ...

They recommend the mid point display which is 1600xsomething. But all those extra pixels for just £30 more .... wahhhhh ....

Well the 17" widescreen I'm going for has that resolution. I'm currently using a 15.4" which is 1400x1050, which I found tiny at first, but I've got used to it now. Certainly they don't have focussing problems like you might on a CRT - and at higher resolutions, you notice the difference in focus between the edges and the centre of the screen - I don't care how much 'flat screen' technology you've pumped into it.

If the model I chose was 17" I'd probably be confident and just get it. However, I am *really* worried that 1920x1200 on a 15.4" might be painful.

There's 3 specs available:

WXGA(?) 1400xsomething
WSXGA+ 1680x1050 (dell recommended)
WXXGA 1920x1200

I'm never good at decisions like this. Apparently we have a lower spec model in work with 1680x1050 on a 15.4" - although they've currently 'lost' the laptop. I'm really keen to see *something* for comparision before buying blind.

What spec GFX card does your super-turbo-nutter-lapper have? Mine comes with either 256 or 512Mb ATI. I specified 256, but - I'm wondering if with the higher res it's worth going for the 512.

Argggh.

I'm buying this laptop for gaming purposes. I figure that the difference in CPU isn't that amazing (2.0 or 2.13GHz, which is 6%, for another £315), but you can't upgrade anything in the laptop once you buy it. So, yes, because of the screen res, and the way games are going, I decided to splash out the (then £129 extra, now it's more like £239 extra) to get the best GFX card with the extra RAM to support me into the future.

The card I've gone for is the Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX with 512MB RAM.
