I just scored myself a working but rather scuffed, unlocked Nokia 6310i! I did this by requesting a key for the pedestal next to me at my new desk, and discovering it in there, checking with the head of IT who simply said have it!

Now I'll have to transfer all my numbers - which I will do through tools, but I remember that each phone uses a different version of the Nokia software, and I had to write a little script to convert between the two - joy.

Gosh.

But then, I'm crap at selling things, and you wanted your phone back (oh, and typically something snapped off the back of your phone cover as I opened it, and it now won't stay closed :( sorry.)

That's OK, You can give me the money to replace the cover and I'll either replace it or keep the money and use a different cover.

Yeah, I thought you had other covers, but it's a bit of a pain even so..

Also, if the scuffing bothers you, you can get it a new fascia. :)

You actually have your own phone?! One that is actually yours and not owned by someone else?!

*faints*

Only because I had the wits to order the key and ask nicely :)

It has bluetooth, and my laptop doesn't have infrared, so I'm going to have to look into getting the bluetooth thing for it. This might be hard. :/

Make use of [livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000's USB IrDA (plugged into Panther)? I have one as well if you want to borrow mine (not so essential for me now I have IrDa on the laptop)?

Well, yes, but it would be cool to have it work directly with my new shiny :)

Cost you about £5 to £6 to get one from eBay, just plug into one of yuor side USB ports and you have an IrDA capable laptop, with the port in much the same place as it would be for a built in laptop. :)

Just keep it in your laptop bag with any other bits, it weighs pretty much nothing.

Hmmm. I'd rather get the Dell internal bluetooth thing working. I'll give them a call now and see what they say.

If you'd sync'ed via a Mac you'd be home by now ;)

Well I still have both phones. Want to lend me a hand? :)

I transferred Kitty's numbers via Outlook. Most software will sync with Outlook, so I use it as a go-between for different phones (and as backup for contact data!). Text messages are a different matter though, if you want to keep any of those, you'll have to translate...

Ah, that could work too.

With the bonus that if you do get yourself an IR thingy so you always have the ability to link, you can also sync your phone with you Outlook calendar (and Outlook can be synced with our shared calendar)

I have to say I'm against tieing myself to Outlook. I don't like the way it works; I think there are better solutions out there. The trouble is because it's the incumbent that's what everyone supports...

Heh, I quite like it actually, but I still don't use it as anything other than a go-between and backup for contacts.

About once a week, I'll open it, sync it with online stuff, then sync my phone with it, then close it again and ignore it. :)

Well with the way the OS is going I'd rather not end up having to later move from Outlook or fork out for a legit copy, aside from the rest of it..

Oxygen Phone Manager is lovely for moving settings between different models of Nokia. It's not free, but it's good enough that I was willing to part with the cash, and I'm really tight when it comes to buying software. (-8

I'd quite like a 6310 if you ever find any more!
