I've not got much joy from DnDOnlineGames, so I'm seriously considering running a fantasy D&D 3.5e game. I haven't got any details yet, but I'm considering running it under a separate community on LiveJournal (the dnd site has been frustratingly unstable in the past).

Would anyone from here be interested in joining in? I would expect players to make a post per day during the week, and be able to commit to doing so. I am hoping it will be involving. You will need in-depth characters with their own motivations etc as I will be promoting character interaction.

On a side note, I don't have a satisfactory dice rolling mechanism yet, but I do know a site which will store character sheets.

Why abandon tabletop?
Can you make it to Bristol once a week? I'm gonna run some cthulhu over summer - although i admit that's a long way to go for role playing.
As for dice rolling, you'd have to be pretty pathetic to lie about your rolls... can't everyone just role some on their desk and report the results?

I already do a tabletop once a week in Cheltenham - there are advantages and disadvantages to online gaming - one big advantage I see is that interactions can be a lot more in depth when time is allowed to write them creatively...

As for dice rolling, yes, I could do that, but I think there are answers that don't require too much effort to implement which would make this better :)

If you're after online roleplaying type stuff, I've heard good things about rpol.net (http://www.rpol.net/)...

Do you know how stable it is? That is my main problem with the other site I've mentioned.. I will look into how they handle the various requirements I will have, like dice rolling etc.

only if I can be a cleric6/heartwarden10 of Sune. Or a Paladin
(enough cheese there as is) or a Tiefling Arcane Archer....or..or...

*giggle*

I am crap at making sure I do things, like email stuff when it is YOU MUST do stuff, so I will pass...much as it seems interesting and I wish you well.

I'm not good at email either, but when it's on a website and you can see the progression of the game, much like LiveJournal, it's easier to keep up with things.

The way I'd handle it is if a player didn't check in, I'd have them do their 'default' action for the situation - but I'd only do that after we'd been waiting for a while..

I might be interested in giving it a go. Haven't done any D&D for quite some time. How much of a commitment would you be looking at?

Well, a commitment to being able to post a couple of paragraphs once a day during the week; enough to keep things moving along really. It should take you 15-20 minutes a day once it's going...

Ok, if you'll have me, sign me up! :-)

I could theoretically knock up a system to host it in Rails. If it worked well, I'd actually have something marketable, but it'd be the perfect testing ground. However, I'm about 2-3 weeks until I'll be happy enough with my coding abilities in it to do it!

For my purposes, I'm contemplating knocking up a simple perl script that will present a web interface to users to input their dice rolls and a text field indicating what they're for - the program will then simply email me with the results. That way I'll know if they're rolling lots or trying to fudge their rolls.

Basically I want it to be simple to use.

To be honest, I was thinking more a "complete hosting platform" rather than just a diceroller. Just a thought!

Um. Okay. Other systems have been based on BB systems, LiveJournal, etc. Character sheets for D&D are complicated as well - 3EProfiler does a good job though. Maps? Rules? etc. Do you want to make it stick to one roleplaying system?

Sounds like a lot of work to me.

Hmm, good point. I've used entire management systems before, and I'm pretty familiar with AD&D 3.0 / 3.5 sheets. It does sound like a ballache though on reflection.

Still, I'll give it some thought.

I would love to say yes. However, current circumstances rule out that sort of committment. Hope it goes well for you.

I know this will make me look really stupid, which is why i waited a bit to reply lol, but what is it actually all about? i mean how does it work? roleplaying suggests that it is pretend, so is it just a pretend game? and if so how do you decide the rules etc.
sorry i just don't understand :o/

Try this article or others you might get from googling for roleplaying basics :)
