dr_athiest is evil. I freely admit he made me do it. I now have a bluetooth GPS unit, and I know the position of kissycat1000's house very accurately.

Now, fellow LJers, tell me of some PC software that acts like TomTom with by GPS unit on my laptop (Windows or Linux). Because I can't seem to figure out which software I should be looking at..

I have already worked out how to get the raw logs mapped onto Google Earth.. :)

I have some software at home (original too!) which runs under both windows and Linux. Can't remember the name, but will check it out when home tomorrow. It's probably an old version, but you're more than welcome to it - in fact, it may be a cheap upgrade path to the latest version. I have a GPS receiver that talks RS232 too, if its of any use. *shruggery*

There's:
- Route 66.
- Microsoft Autoroute.
- Something beginning with A that I can't remember.

And they're all rubbish.

The laptop does doesn't work for in car Navigation. I know, I tried. In the end I put TomTom Mobile on my Nokia 6600 and THAT works well.

I'm contemplating getting a pda or a sub-notebook with a touch screen, but I haven't researched this market at all. Ideally I'd want something that will run standard windows or linux stuff.

I wonder if there's a pda/etc emulator for a PC?

It's the practicality of the laptop that's the problem. The screen isn't good enough to see when driving (on any laptop I've seen), the sound isn't clear enough to understand, the battery life isn't good enough to last a longish journey (the kind where you need the navigation) and the laptop is unwieldy and cumbersome for the times you need to recode your destination or change the config on the fly.

My recommendation would be to find an old Symbian phone from ebay or somewhere (the 6600 is perfectly adequate) and purchase a half-gig memory card for it. The practicality of it far exceeds that of using the laptop.

Yeah I agree with the practicality problem. Although technically I'd only need to turn it on for the last part of most journeys :)

I've been wanting a pda type thing for a while anyway, so I've now got another excuse to get one :)
