This is a story about Murphy's law. Once apon a time there were two frogs. One of them spots a place with loads of flies, and says to the other "Let's go there and fill our bellies!" So they hop off and jump through an open window - but unfortunately they land in a bowl of cream. Now frogs aren't best equipped to deal with cream, but nonetheless they start swimming. The frogs are getting tired but persevere. The second frog decides they're getting nowhere but the first frog persuades him to keep going. After the second hour however the second frog gives up, and drowns in the cream. The first frog perseveres, and after many hours something changes. Eventually the cream has been churned enough that it has turned to butter, and the first frog manages to exhaustedly leap out of the bowl.

The moral of the story is to keep going until it gets butter.

This story was related to me on telling my woes. Good news, bad news once again: Good news! I reconnected the battery and the central locking behaved, and the car started! I drove myself and [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut home, so we don't have to go back and sort out the car or pick up the stuff. This is Good News™. The bad news is that I didn't realise my bike's MOT runs out today and I haven't booked it in. Now they're electronic I'm wondering what penalty I'll get for this :/ Still, I'll book it in today and not ride it until then, so at least I'm showing willing and actually being legal.

Now for a long Monday after not very good sleep...

I dont believe there is an automatic penalty for not having an MOT - so long as you only drive it to a garage with an appointment.

Things may be different for a tax disk/SORN.

Thanks, it's booked in tomorrow now and the guy at the garage said the same.

As far as I know there is no obligation to keep vehicles with an MOT. There is no mechanism to positively validate vehicles without MOTs. Tax is obviously a different issue.

If your bike isn't MOT'd but is taxed don't ride it. It's not a problem.

Well, yes, but they're electronic now, so I think there is a mechanism. I don't think there is an obligation except I fear they might have surreptitiously made it one to ease their administrative burden. In any case I shall not be riding it, no :)

Tax has a 14 day grace period to SORN or tax, during which you're not allowed to drive the vehicle. MOT does not have a SORN-like requirement. If it's not MOTd you're not allowed to drive it, you're not obliged to register it as unMOTd.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I just booked it in for an MOT tomorrow, and the guy the other end confirmed our thoughts :)

Of course if you've forgotten to tax it just SORN it on the net and unsorn it as soon as you've got the MOT. I did this with the R1 last year when I forgot the MOT and couldn't get to the stealer in time for the tax. It was SORNed for nearly three days :)

There's only a penalty for not having an MOT if you drive/ride it. Otherwise you are fine.
You are allowed to ride it to a prebooked MOT after it's expired and that's it.

It is only illegal to ride/drive without valid insurance and your insurance is invalid without current MoT... so i think you are fine..... it is only the Tax they screw you for.
