I just read that a teenager has released a dictionary for parents of other teenagers. Nothing amazing by itself, but I discovered that the teenage word for cool, is apparently 'book'. I was rather tickled to discover that the reason for this is that 'book' is the first suggestion by predictive text when typing 'cool' into a mobile phone.

God I hate mobile phones.

I think I'll just entertain myself with the idea that the real reason is that books are cool.

A couple of years back I had a posting discussing names for mis-predicted text, things like phone-nyms and faux-nyms.

Since mobile phones pay my salary, I am predisposed towards them (except for the asshole on the train this morning, in a "quiet zone" carriage, who had FOUR loud and long conversations on the phone in the 25 minutes it took to get to Waterloo, including one he started as we were less than 30 seconds outside of the station. What a dickhead.

They used to pay my salary, but I hated them possibly more back then.

Bah, "Book" has been slang for cool since like... 1999 easily.
It's so out of date ^_^

I'm sure with the teaching I'll learn these sorts of things all the time! Also interesting how terminology for the same words varies across the country - in the north east the word for chewing gum is 'chewy' rather than 'gum' as we call it here.. I wasn't entirely sure what they were going on about originally.

Chewing gum is Chuddy, surely? It certainly was in N.Yorks.

Ooh! According to urbandictionary.com it is indeed also called Chuddy. I could say that to them the next time I shove a bin in a kid's face - "Spit out your chuddy", but I usually don't bother and just put the bin in their face ;)
