The upgrade had many.. hiccups, but it's completed now. I spent from 11pm last Monday night until 5:30am on the Tuesday morning, then from 9:30am on Tuesday until 12:30am on Wednesday morning.

I've spent most evenings since then (bar the weekend) tweaking, fixing and updating. I now have an upgraded server, hosting it's own wireless access point, Exchange, and nearly all of the important services that the old server had.

Now I just need to get everyone set up with Exchange and ensure they're happy with it, figure out a backup mechanism for it, etc.

It's taken a fairly monumental effort, but I've got there, and I'm happy with the results :)

On a side note, I got into work and it was still fairly gloomy. I got back from work and it was gloomy. Winter - bah, humbug.

Sorted the domain issue out?

Karmic imbalance ahoy: I started my server up, it emitted about twelve long and short beeps, waited a bit, beeped a few more times then stopped.

Considering it had a dead IDE channel, dead USB ports, 384MB of PC133, booted off a CF card which didn't do DMA (and looks like it's died now), won't boot from USB on the board's headers, is large and requires a VGA monitor which I don't have any longer...

Yes. My suspicions were correct - I ended up leaving two separate DNS zones - the original internal one and the AD-required one, but I configured the www. name in the AD one pointing at my router's internal address, and the full name in the internal zone. This fixed the majority of my issues. I've yet to check if ActiveSync now works (I've left my iPod Touch at [livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000's) but the folder permission problem has gone and most other things now work.

I have a spare server of almost exactly those specs now. I think work has a lot of machines too - you might be able to cadge one of them ;)

Hooray! :)

Say a 2.4GHz Celeron with 2GB of RAM? I could do...

It's very rapidly approaching the time of year when I see no daylight whatsoever from Monday to Friday. It's already dark when I leave (not gloomy, proper dark!) but at least I still get a little time when I get home.

Good news on the server. :)

Is anyone ever really happy with Exchange?

Hi, sorry to drop a random comment like this, but I was wondering if there's room for three people to come stay next Friday night?

Pol and I are going to introduce Arwen to Halloween Judder and we'd need crash space. (Of course, it's also a very good excuse to introduce Arwen to at least one quite shiny person :))

There is crash space, but I won't be going out as I'm babysitting. If you hang around on Saturday you may see the others after they get back from London :)
