You know when you embark on a task, you realise it's going to require some learning. I think there are four stages to this learning process (I've googled but I can't find anything that quite matches what I'm going to say here):

Knowledge
don't havehave
Awarenessaware
2. Discovery3. Pain
1. Ignorance4. Victory!
unaware

  1. Ignorance. Here you aren't aware you don't have the knowledge, and you also don't have the knowledge. Ignorance is bliss!
  2. Discovery. You start on the task and become quickly aware that you don't have the knowledge.
  3. Pain. You start learning about the knowledge, but all you are aware of at this stage is just how much you don't know! Pain! (incidentally, this is where I am now and hence why I'm procrastinating *grin*)
  4. Victory! You have the knowledge and are no longer aware of the lack of it.

Aside: isn't know a stupid word?!

Well I'm at work on a Wednesday, first time in four weeks. This is an improvement. However, sleeping continues to be an issue - I also seem to be sleeping very lightly at present which causes problems when I try to share a bed with [livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000 during the week - not an ideal situation by any stretch of the imagination.

I remember having an anxiety dream last night where I was supposed to be making a call to a work meeting at 4pm although I was at home ill. I remember realising the time was something like 4:06pm or 4:07pm and not dialling in for fear of turning up late, and of course feeling guilty about missing the call.

I'm feeling a bit more chipper though thanks to all your reassurance on my last post, and I'm starting to arrange social things too :)

I need icons of all my hobbies (crossed out ones I already have icons for): hifi, roleplaying, geeking (I have several), poker, boardgames, computer gaming, cycling, archery (will be starting that soon, hopefully!) and I could do with a few other icons for moods.

I have an 'eyes down' icon which represents a number of moods, but I could do with one for when I'm feeling emo (self flagellating) rather than actually down. I also need another one other than my 'nice fish' one for a general icon, preferably that doesn't contain my face. I also need a distinct (from my LJ icons) one for FaceBook that represents me - a caricature or symbol, perhaps? Any suggestions or offers of help gratefully received!

I'm so tired.

I did a little bit of philosophical musing while in the smallest room on the quaint human trait in measuring our age by the number of times we've orbited the sun.. but then I decided it was just as good a measure as any other and went back to my desk.

..but there was something wrong. [livejournal.com profile] jinx_lbc wasn't there!

[livejournal.com profile] ivytip just popped round and delivered 18l of water and a hug! Somewhat of a surprise, but not an unpleasant one in any way :)

Grrr.

  1. Lost my wallet. Again.
  2. Still not healthy. This weekend may finish me off, but I'm not missing it.
  3. (Hopefully) mild insomnia as a result of worry.
Grrr.

I just received a very strange phone call on my work phone from a young woman who sounded like she was trying to put on 'airs'. I could hear traffic noises. She talked about something - I couldn't decide if she was a sales drone, someone I knew, or what. Consequently I don't recall all of what she said, especially as it didn't make a lot of sense.

She said something about going down to the shops for cigarettes and a book. Then she talked about Charles Dickens and said that she thought his book was a bunch of *expletives deleted* - kind of how you might imagine a tourettes outburst might sound like. After a slightly stunned silence on my part I asked "Who is this?" but realised they'd already hung up.

How strange!

A sign?

Today I managed to forget to take in my pass for work. Not a major problem - the front desk still had a spare pass I borrowed with a £5 deposit. However, then I got in and logged into my laptop - which decided the profile was corrupt and set me up a new one. How nice of it.

Luckily logging out and back in again seemed to fix its hiccup. Hmpf. Not a great start to the week.

The weekend was a quiet one for me, and I took full advantage of it by doing practically nothing I have on my list (aside from a load of washing and some washing up) and instead taking T to the cinema (except that turned out to be T and her friend) and then playing computer games for the rest of it, when I didn't watch some more Heroes or eat or sleep.

Speaking of sleep, I'm knackered today. I woke up early for some reason and just don't seem to be properly awake. Apparently I have some dude coming in to work with me today so I better wake up soon.

This is. :)

ETA: Also, this :)

[livejournal.com profile] anti_girl you are a genius ;)

At the moment the place that [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut and I live in doesn't have a name, and we've struggled to work out a name for it. So in true geek/internet style, I'm polling for suggestions :)

I know of several other places with definite names: Fortress Geek, House of Goth, House of Plot. I like that style of name, so I'd be grateful if you'd choose your favourite(s) from the list below, and then also suggest what it should be a 'House of' or what have you.

[Poll #982934]

Of course we reserve the right not to go with the majority decision or even use it at all, but it might be fun to see what we get :)

At the moment I'm stressed. I have a lot to do at work (although I've found made a lull in which to post this) and I'm fighting off some illness as well. I'm not sure my responses to things are in the 'normal' range either, so for now I'm going to sit on them until I work things out for myself a bit more.

At any rate, [livejournal.com profile] kweilo provided a nice reminder/distraction/escape for something I've seen before, and I browsed the site with the page on giant spacecraft (the 'BIG' tab) to see the Dyson sphere - the concept of a giant hollow sphere engulfing a star, with people living on the inside. A link from that page goes into lots more detail about the theory behind it and works of science fiction that have used this and other similar concepts as the basis of their stories, which is (to me) absolutely fascinating.

[livejournal.com profile] kissycat1000, in one of her rather mysteriously timely ways, sent me a link of news of a discovery of a near-by earth-like planet.

In my state of escapism, it made me nostalgic for an era of space travel and colonisation I'll never see - which quite frankly is nuts, but it's bittersweet to think about.

Last night we watched Event Horizon. It's a good film, but I remember being very disappointed the first time I watched it because it promised to be all spacey and then turned out to be a horror film which happened to be set in space.

I think I need to see Sunshine as a matter of urgency.

Amusement

Check out John Romero (co-founder of iD Software)'s blog - aside from the interesting comments on the future of consoles, there are some amusing YouTube videos on there of the effects of drugs on spiders and a really crap fight scene..

This is a story about Murphy's law. Once apon a time there were two frogs. One of them spots a place with loads of flies, and says to the other "Let's go there and fill our bellies!" So they hop off and jump through an open window - but unfortunately they land in a bowl of cream. Now frogs aren't best equipped to deal with cream, but nonetheless they start swimming. The frogs are getting tired but persevere. The second frog decides they're getting nowhere but the first frog persuades him to keep going. After the second hour however the second frog gives up, and drowns in the cream. The first frog perseveres, and after many hours something changes. Eventually the cream has been churned enough that it has turned to butter, and the first frog manages to exhaustedly leap out of the bowl.

The moral of the story is to keep going until it gets butter.

This story was related to me on telling my woes. Good news, bad news once again: Good news! I reconnected the battery and the central locking behaved, and the car started! I drove myself and [livejournal.com profile] ev1ldonut home, so we don't have to go back and sort out the car or pick up the stuff. This is Good News™. The bad news is that I didn't realise my bike's MOT runs out today and I haven't booked it in. Now they're electronic I'm wondering what penalty I'll get for this :/ Still, I'll book it in today and not ride it until then, so at least I'm showing willing and actually being legal.

Now for a long Monday after not very good sleep...

So today..

I am mostly distracted. I think it's Friday. Yesterday was distracting too. Did I say I was distracted? Pictures and thoughts and thing are not helping. I'm blaming everyone else. Did someone say spring? *fnnnnrrrrrr*

Now this is what I call progress!

Trouble is, I suspect they'd die of hypothermia over here..

Grargh.

This morning I woke up quite gradually, in that I remembered a dream I was having. I can't remember if this is a dream I've had before a long time ago and was revisiting now I was older.

Dream )

Late to work )

Lost keys )

Finally, does anyone have a spare monitor capable of 1024x768 that they don't need any more? Puppy's monitor became unsafe, and the spare I've got is really, really crap (800x600 and very fuzzy). He and I would be very grateful if someone has one they could donate :)

So this morning I got woken up at 5:30, by the wind in my bedroom. Apparently if the wind blows in a certain direction, which would be seemingly rare, it gets forced into my room through the air vent, despite it being closed. The chilly breeze along with the whistling produced was enough to wake me up, distinctly unimpressed. I decided that I wasn't going to be able to get back to sleep with it like that, so cue an impromptu DIY session.. at 5:30 in the morning. I hope my neighbours forgive me for the motorised screwdriver next to their wall (note to self: must get a standard philips screwdriver).

First I tried cutting a section out of a non-crinkly plastic bag, to place between the plastic sections to seal it better. This seemed to work and I went back to bed. A lot quieter too. But no dice! I was still getting chilly breezes! On further investigation the cold air was coming out of the sides of the vent where it doesn't seal properly with the wall. Luckily, I knew exactly where I had some draught excluder hiding away, so used that to seal it properly. This time it worked like a charm, and the bag logo is quite funky through the slats of the vent too.

But, bah! DIY at 5:30 in the morning. Someone up there is having fun taunting me. *shakeyfist*
